Any change in the status of their law was sure to be received unfavorably by them. (2) They can bring peace to their fellow men who are at strife between or among themselves. It is "Go!" Underlying these verses is the challenge that men shall be "like their Father who is in heaven." Eternity is at hand; and if thou die in thy sins, where God is thou shalt never come. What an awful consideration is this! A real Christian ought rather to beg of God the grace to bear patiently and quietly the imperfections of his wife, than to think of the means of being parted from her. The general class of the persecuted in the preceding verse gives way to the personal and individual cases envisioned in this verse. That passage before us is not contradictory. The location of this verse in the midst of Jesus' teaching on adultery makes the meaning clear. Because it is natural to man to avenge himself, and plague those who plague him; and he will ever find abundant excuse for his conduct, in the repeated evils he receives from others; for men are naturally hostile to each other. What then should be done with the light or influence of the Christian's life? In the things that concern our eternal salvation, we need the most pointed and express evidence on which to establish the faith of our souls. Like the absence of ordinary hunger, this spiritual lack of hunger is due to the awful cancer of sin gnawing out the heart of the victim. The hatred of the first we are to meet with love. The merciful - The word mercy, among the Jews, signified two things: the pardon of injuries, and almsgiving.
